Confirm your own eligibility
Use the Florida Department of Revenue exemption information and your county property appraiser. Explain your ownership and intended use accurately. Do not assume that a seller’s exemption transfers to you or that moving to Florida alone establishes eligibility.
Ask about the filing process
Request the county’s current application instructions, required evidence and deadlines directly. If you previously owned a Florida homestead, ask whether portability is relevant and which separate forms are required. Keep a copy of what you submit and the acknowledgement.
Follow the official decision
Check the property record and correspondence for the outcome. If something does not match your circumstances, contact the property appraiser promptly about the correction or review process. Keep any savings outside your committed budget until confirmed.
Your decision checklist
- County instructions obtained
- Ownership and use documented
- Portability question answered
- Application acknowledgement retained
